Plein Art Paint Out

The Plein Art Paint Out is a Painting Competition and Art Sale held in conjunction with the Sculpture Tour unveiling. Artists are invited to paint up to two canvases of scenic, historic Downtown Decatur. Paintings are judged and offered for sale.

Friday, June 9, 2017, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Judging will occur at 3:30 PM, winners will be announced at 4:00 PM. Paintings will be on display 4:00 - 6:00 PM, and offered for sale, if the artist chooses. Artwork must remain on display until 6:00 PM, even if sold.

Artistic Heritage

Experience Decatur’s rich heritage as the birthplace and boyhood home of David Smith, widely heralded as the greatest American sculptor of the 20th century.

Decatur is also the hometown of preeminent American sculptor Ralph Hurst. Two of his works are on permanent display in Decatur’s Adams Public Library, and one at the Adams County Museum.

The 2017 Decatur Sculpture Tour kicks off Friday, June 9, 2017. New sculptures will be unveiled at 6 p.m. with 20 artists on hand to explain their work. Enjoy the works though our guided tour or download the free “Otocast” app to you smartphone and enjoy the tour at your own pace. The Wine Tasting is back this year along with our wonderful food vendors. Please come and meet the artists, enjoy artistic expression, and vote for People’s Choice in Decatur’s historic downtown.

2017 Unveiling

Letting Go
2016 Unveiling of I Know How This Ends; I Read the Book" by artist Lawrence "Doc" Weidman, Decatur, Indiana.

The installation and unveiling for the 2017 sculptures will be Friday, June 9 during a downtown celebration. The unveiling ceremony includes a guided tour and comments by artists. As a 10-month exhibit, visitors are welcome to return and use the audio tour or brochures listing the sculptures in specially-marked Decatur Sculpture Tour street stands.

New for the 2017-2018 exhibition, visitors can download a free App on their smartphone and listen to the artists as they tour the sculptures. The service is Otocast and can be found in the App Store. The audio and walking tour maps will be available beginning June 9. The unveiling and other events will be held at the Courthouse Square in Downtown Decatur. The art exhibit is free and parking is plentiful.

2016 APLS Children's Sculpture Creation

The Adams Public Library System is sponsoring a hands-on Sculpture Creation Activity. Children ages 5 through 12 are invited to create their own sculpture! Everything is provided, the event is offered free of charge.
